[Ann] CintaNotes 2.3 Beta 1

Postby CintaNotes Developer » Mon Jul 01, 2013 5:16 am

Hi all,
we are glad to present a new beta to you!

Jul 1, 2013 - Version 2.3 Beta1

In this version:

Features:
  • New search option "Search across field boundaries"
With this mode, searching for "word1 word2" will find notes
containing e.g. "word1" in Title and "word2" in the Link field. Same goes for other field combinations.
However, the search with this mode on is a bit slower than normal search.

Enhancements:
  • Option in cintanotes.settings to run DB integrity check on every notebook load (disabled by default)
  • Simplenote sync: added "server not responding" sync status
  • Recycle bin: show only Cancel button in R/O note editor
  • Editor: Use Alt+L instead of Alt+Down to focus the Link field
  • Added confirmation dialog to merge command
  • Editor: display warning when linked files don't exist
  • Auto fixing of DB indices when damaged
  • Installer: Check free updates expiration date by settings or key date
  • Installer: Restore portable version

Fixes:
  • Window position not remembered when window has been placed using Win+Left/Right commands in Win7
  • "Download" button in Update dialog sometimes not working
  • Editor: http://test:80 not recognized as URL
  • Recycle bin: exception on trying to paste into R/O note editor
  • Recycle bin: modifying context menu commands should be disabled in R/O note editor
  • Recycle bin: note preview is not closed on ESC
  • HTML export: hard line breaks are not created
  • Editor: paragraph style is lost on Del press
  • Editor: various undo bugs
  • Notes list: note color doesn't change on cut and paste
  • Simplenote sync: can't download note with backslash at end of text
  • Crash on wrong paragraph formatting

Portable: CintaNotes_2_3_Beta1.zip

Looking good.
But, with this, and maybe previous beta, lasy sync date/time (at bottom) not being updated *sometimes* - maybe only when a proxy is used? Sync seems to have worked ok though.

Hi Nod, thanks for checking it out!

Could you please tell me what the sync status was? It's the tooltip message.
Usually the time is not updated when the sync was not able to finish successfully.
A log file would be of great help here too. Thanks

Ok, On the ‘failing’ one, every time I sync it says
-Logging on
-Retrieving note index
-Downloading new notes (count as appropriate, and always seems to get the new / updated notes)
-Uploading updates (as appropriate, but when no changes ALWAYS says 1 of 1)
Status - sync not completed, please try later
Can’t do a log now, maybe later

Thanks, Nod. Seems that we already have this issue on our radar. Will try to fix till the final release.

Thanks.

I ran CN to get a log.
I looked in the log to see what personal data I may wish to remove.
I saw the text of one note repeated around 20 times.
There was no text relating to any other notes.

In CN I copied the text from THAT note to WORD and deleted the note.
Ran sync - went OK
I recreated the note in CN.
Ran sync - went OK

So, corrupt note?
But, problem fixed.
And, as stated before, this occurred in previous beta also, probably starting on 26/6.

That's really interesting. I must say you have outstanding debugging skills;)
Would be great if you could send the original text of that note to me at support@cintanotes.com.
Probably some Unicode character is causing trouble.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but sorry I don’t have the original, only the current – which I assume, as I hoped, has lost any hidden or strange charters in the copy and paste operation. I may even have done paste special / unformatted text – I tend to do that a lot automatically. And in any case the note had so much personal information to be removed it may now have been any use. Sorry again, I do know the value of hard examples. Nod

Hi Alex,

great to have a new (beta) version of CintaNotes. :D

I did a quick shakedown test as usual.

  • Search Across field boundaries: ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. I did a test and confirm i can now search for any combination regardless of where the search text is contained. Search in title, text, link and stringinized tags!!! I noticed one minor issue though. It appears that the setting of the option is not respected in the different sections, respectively the "all" section.
  • Recycle bin: Thanks for the fixes. Some smaller issues: first time i opened recycle bin i used arrow down to scroll the list and when pressing enter i noticed it will close the dialog, because the focus remains on the close button. No big deal, but nothing i'd expected. Also a double click did not open the editor, but second try i was no longer able to reproduce. In the context menu "copy note link" is active. Why? It actually asks for saving the note when clicked.
  • Editor: paragraph style is lost on Del press - confirm fixed :D

Thanks again for that great update!!!

I just thought that maybe you still got it in that log file.. but anyway, since it contained personal info we'd have to do it on our own.
Thanks anyway :)

Great that it works so well for you ;)
It should behave the same as "Search inside words", and as far as I can see, it does. Could you please be a bit more specific, what exactly is not working as expected?

Well it doesn't.

Steps to reproduce

  • i click "all"
  • "search inside words" (siw) and "search across field boundaries" (safb) are both checked
  • i click my first tab (section)
  • "search inside words" (siw) and "search across field boundaries" (safb) are both checked
  • i click "all"
  • i uncheck siw
  • i click my first tab (section)
  • siw is still checked (fine)
  • i click "all"
  • siw is checked again (BAD)
  • i uncheck safb
  • i click my first tab (section)
  • safb is also unchecked (BAD)

The settings appear to interfere each other.

Yes, you're right. Here is the simplified test case:
  • Set siw=safb=on in section1
  • Click All
  • Uncheck safb
  • Click on section1
  • safb=off but should be on.

Thanks, will be fixed till 2.3 release.

I am note sure about the following, but i have observed, that sometimes when i save a note, the current filter will be reset. That is, saving the current note in the editor, affects the notes list. It shouldn't, right?

In earlier CN versions this would happen when the note you'd been editing would disappear from view because it didn't pass the filter anymore.
To ensure that the just edited note is in view and focused, the filter was cleared.
However the was unexpected for users and I've removed this functionality. Probably some remnants of this are still there..
Could you please give me a repeatable test case?
Thanks

I will, if i can. So far i was not able to observe a pattern. In general i prefer, that saving a note should not affect the current filter at all. There are times when i have multiple editor windows open. Most of them won't reflect the filter anymore. Now saving one of them will destroy the current view. Imo, leave the filter alone. Don't change it at all. If one note really disappears from the filter, it won't hurt, because i have it still open. Also i can go back to the notes list and start a new search for it anytime.

I've checked the code and it seems that I've added an option for that to cintanotes.setting, filters.autoreset.keepeditednotevisible, which is false by default. Could you please check your settings?

ah, a fresh new version :)

As I am not a "Simplenote Sync" user I am glad to see some new features concerning the core functionality (taking notes and searching). "Search across field boundaries" will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Chris
