Importing help

Postby cinnamonbear » Sat Nov 30, 2013 9:51 am

I am trying to transfer my CintaNotes db from an old computer to a new one but am hung up on what the file name is. Nothing I have tried and I have tried umpteen combinations (except the correct one). Everything else appears on the import screen except the "file name".

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi cinnamonbear,
not sure I understood your question correctly, but the notebook file name usually is "cintanotes.db" either near cintanotes.exe or in %APPDATA%/CintaNotes

Thank you for your very prompt reply.
Unfortunately the file names you gave me do not work either.
I may have not made myself clear enough.
If you go to CintaNotes-File-Import
Import Notes will appear
My import file on a flash drive appears
Next is "file type" which comes up blank (the part of I am missing) as does the down arrow
Next is "files of type" which comes up with %APPDATA%/CintaNotes

Hope this will give you more of a clue to helping me.
Thanks again.

So the problem is that although you navigate to the correct folder, the file doesn't appear in the list? Can you find the file with the standard Windows Explorer?
Which extension does it have?
A screenshot would help as well.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Do you want me to send a screen shot of:

File explorer-Programs (X86)

or another folder?

I did notice that the app data file is empty, should this be so,since it was listed on "import notes" (%APPDATA%/CintaNotes)?

Would an uninstall/install be worth trying? I did not mention earlier that I have Windows 8.1.

Thanks.

Sorry but I still don't quite understand the problem.
You want to get your old data file on a new machine.
For this, you need to find your old notebook file on the old machine
and copy it to the new machine.
Since you are already doing File/Import, I assumed that you had
the file. But it seems that you couldn't find it?
Once again: can you find the file with Windows Explorer?

I have the CintaNotes db. file on a flash drive from my old computer.

This is what the file on "f" drive reads: "cintanotes 1/28/2013 9:17AM text document 1,286 kb"

Are you thinking I have a bad copy or what, because the "file name" does not appear on the "import notes"?

I do have the program in Windows Explorer on the old computer in Program Files.

I just need the name of the file, none that I have tried nor the ones that were given earlier have worked.

Are we confusing each other more?

Thanks for trying.

Ok now I begin to understand ;)
It seems that your file is a .TXT file.
CintaNotes cannot import TXT files, only export them.
You should find the original .DB file, which will be importable.

You were correct that I was importing the wrong file.

Sorry, one more problem, when I either right or left click on CintaNotes, this pops up:

CintaNotes
Activated already running (app.name) instance.

OK

What could be causing that?

Thanks a big bunch for helping get the file straightened out and figuring out my description. You have a great program.

Glad that I could help!

The message about activating an already started instance pops up when
you try to run CintaNotes using its shortcut when it is in fact already
running.
You can
1) Disable the activation message via editing cintanotes.settings file and
setting there startup.multipleinstances.activationmsg = 0
or
2) Allow multiple instance of CintaNotes to be started with Options/Startup/Allow multiple instances (usually that is NOT what you want!)

Hope this helps!

I think you mean to go to reg/edit to perform this task:

1) Disable the activation message via editing cintanotes.settings file and
setting there startup.multipleinstances.activationmsg = 0

Just want to make sure.

Thanks again and I am very glad you could help.

No regedit, you need to find the configuration file named 'CintaNotes.settings', and edit it in Notepad.

Tried all sorts of search with in CintaNots and other places for configuration files and settings files for CintaNotes. Searchs kept saying no matches found. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

The file is named "cintanotes.settings" literally, and it should be either near cintanotes.exe, or in %APPDATA%/CintaNotes.

Using search, cintanotes.settings, cintanotes.exe. and %APPDATA%/CintaNotes do not come up nor do they in cintanotes (programs X86). I have searched so many places for it, what did I miss? I have searched in the control panel and the app page in 8.1.
Thanks!

Let's try this:

1) Go into Windows desktop
2) Exit CintaNotes (important! right-click on the tray icon and choose "Exit")
3) Press Win+E to run Windows Explorer
4) In the address bar on the top, type "%APPDATA%\CintaNotes" and press Enter (here I'm assuming that you've used the installer version of CN, and accepted the default install location, which is Program Files (x86))
5) In the files list, there should be "cintanotes.settings"
6) Right-click on it and select "Edit with Notepad"

I feel dumb, I put the earlier information in the search area not the address area, so did not get where I was supposed to. Can I blame that on a new computer?

I went to edit with notepad, found the two earlier areas that you wrote about earlier and changed the 1 to a 0 in startup.multipleinstances.activationmsg = 0

but could not figure out how to disable "Disable the activation message via editing cintanotes.settings file"

I found delete but not disable.

Also there is no place to exit from the tray icon, I had to go to the program itself to exit.

I really do appreciate your working with me on this problem, had hoped just changing the one to zero would have solved it but no luck.. yet.

Thanks!

Make sure that the changes you've made really stuck. If CN was running while you were making the changes,
on program exit they would be overwritten.

I went to edit with notepad, found the two earlier areas that you wrote about earlier and changed the 1 to a 0 in startup.multipleinstances.activationmsg = 0

That's correct, nicely done.

but could not figure out how to disable "Disable the activation message via editing cintanotes.settings file"

You don't need to do this.

Also there is no place to exit from the tray icon, I had to go to the program itself to exit.

How exactly did you exit? If "Options/Window/Close to system tray" is set, then clicking on "X" would just minimize CN, not exit it.

Thank you for the nicely done!
I exited CN from the file menu.
But for the BIG news, late yesterday when I opened CN, it opened correctly, Yeah for your time and effort. I was just going to send a new post to you when your's arrived.
Now one more question, of course, why doesn't the taskbar icon have "new note" show on a right click? Was it not used that much, or did I miss checking off something?
Thanks!
