The issue I reported a couple of times before with different versions where I click the CN icon and the program does not start as it immediately crashes is still in this new version sadly. As there is no error/crash message, there are no details I can give.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the report!

My wild guess is that the cause of this is our Enigma protector. It uses virtualizing of blocks of code,
and probably sometimes generates a buggy virtual machine. This can explain why the crash happens
even before the log is initialized.
Could you please try this version and tell me if it is working better?

Thanks!

Thanks Alex, I will give it a try. Should I enable debug logging, or leave it disabled?

I think it doesn't matter)

No problem, I will try it. I have never been able to reliably reproduce the problem and it is very intermittent, so what I plan to do is to install the test build and then just open and close CN a bunch of times to see if it fails (the theory being that the more times I open and close it, the closer it gets to failing - of course, in this case the absence of a crash won't necessarily prove that the new build has solved the problem...)

Good idea, Chris - I'll be waiting for your results! Thanks

So far so good. The first day I just opened CN about 20 times in a row manually, so clicking the CN icon, waiting for it to open, then going File->Exit, and then rinse and repeat. No crashes. The second day I realised I could automate this, so I wrote a script to open CN, close it, then prompt me if I wanted to run the script again or not (if yes, it repeats the steps of opening and closing). Script has so far opened and closed CN a few dozen times so far with no crashes. Will keep trying to crash it of course...

Ok, build does not fix the problem I'm afraid. On about the 26th run tonight (ie opening and closing CN 26 times in a row), the new build failed to open. Again, no error message and no crash log (confirmed the crash via the Windows crash reports applet again).

Ok Chris, thanks for the info! Could you please post the details of the crash from the applet?

It is a shame that the Windows error reports no longer work like they used to (not sure if it was Vista that changed it, or Seven) - they used to include a dump of the error as an attachment to the report, so as a user you could provide as much information as possible to the developer. However, now the full report details are only sent only to Microsoft and not included with the report on the user's PC (the user only gets a summary of the error from the reports applet), and the developer has to register with Microsoft and access the reports from the Microsoft website (in my experience, most small developers do not do this because of the hassle involved and so the Windows error reports for most apps are useless as no one looks at them).

Thanks Chris.
Now it clear that this is an Access Violation error (most probably dereferencing a null pointer).
That's not much, but something)
With intermittent bugs such as this any piece of information is valuable.

Also please tell me which of the following features you have active:
- SN sync
- Password
- Backup
- Run CN at startup

Also it would be great if you could for some time run CN with debug log activated (and even better would be
to also set in cintanotes.settings "debuginfo = 1".

This will generate huge log files, but if you manage to catch this bug on tape even once, it will all be worth it!
Huge thanks in advance!

Only backup.

Sure, I will see what I can do. Based on the last few days, I can expect CN to crash like this about one in 60 or 70 starts, and with it scripted, it isn't too much of a hassle to start and close CN this many times. Hopefully it will do so while the debug is enabled.

Well ok, that was quick. I don't think I even got to 10 starts/stops of CN before it crashed. Here are the log files:

Huge thanks, Chris, but alas I can't find a single log with the crash or any error on it..
Probably the crashed run didn't produce any log - could this be possible?

Yes, that is possible. The other possibility is that what happened was not a proper crash. I will turn on debugging again and make it crash once more. If we get a log that shows the crash, great - if not, then we will know for sure that the crash does not produce logs.
