Hi Alex,

i've tested the latest enhancements to the option settings.

The new options control the following settings:
filters.reset.multistep = 0|1 => default 1
filters.reset.onctrlf.enabled = 0|1 => default 0

However to disable multireset the following setting must also be applied:
filters.reset.onescape.enabled = 0

Also i have some additional settings that i use, but can not tell what they are actually used for:
app.mainframe.minimizeonenter = 1
app.mainframe.minimizeonescape.immediate = 1
filters.reset.onnewsearch.enabled = 0

Can you give a short description, please?

Thanks!

Thomas

More results on tests i executed:

Notes list: added option to completely hide tags (in "Options/Notes List") => confirmed OK

Editor: numbered list lost on copy paste when text font is large => confirmed FIXED

Editor: whole lines could be trimmed on save => confirmed FIXED

Editor: crash when trying to delete a note which was deleted from the notes list => confirmed FIXED

Remark: in case the note is open in an editor two questions need to be confirmed:

1 Delete note to recycle bin?
2 The note is currently open for editing!
Are you sure you want to delete?

Though it works and is alright, personally i'd prefer i'd be asked only once (using question 2).

Hi Thomas,
Thanks a lot for checking out the beta!

Thomas Lohrum wrote:However to disable multireset the following setting must also be applied:

Hmm, this option doesn't control _multi_-reset, it controls whether Esc resets the filter at all.
So in fact we have a 3-state switch:
  • No reset on Esc
  • Simple all-filter reset on Esc
  • Multi-step reset on Esc (multi-step meaning that text and tag filters are not reset at the same time - text filter is reset first, and tag filter is reset after that.

Thomas Lohrum wrote:Also i have some additional settings that i use, but can not tell what they are actually used for:

That option minimizes main window when you open a note. Has nothing to do with resetting filters.

app.mainframe.minimizeonescape.immediate = 1

This controls whether main window will minimize on Esc even when filter resetting is taking place at the same time.
Doesn't work when app.mainframe.minimizeonescape = 0

filters.reset.onnewsearch.enabled = 0

This is the same as onctrlf, but works when you just start typing in the notes list.
Note that the text filter will be reset in any case, so this setting controls whether the tag filter will be reset.

Note that every confirmation can be disabled by checking the "Do not ask again" checkbox.
Also the first confirmation is necessary when you're deleting multiple notes, only some of
which is opened in editor. I guess we could make deleting 1 note a special case, but
frankly I don't think that will happen so often that it is worth the effort.

Hi Alex,

thanks for this clarification.

Ok, understood. Personally i never liked the multistep reset, because it can give unexpected behaviour. Do you need to press Esc once or twice? Sure, you can take a look, whether a tag filter and/or a text filter is assigned. I never did, since all i want is to reset the filter in one step.

A simpler approach can be:
( ) reset on Esc
(*) exit/minimize on Esc

In other words, don't support multi-reset at all.

Well this is a matter of personal preference I guess. For me multi-step reset is convenient, because
usually I select tags first, and then do a text search. So each Esc press moves me "back" one step.
(Of course we also have the proper "Back" action now, but for some reason I still prefer to use Esc).

Well there's at least one person who uses it: me ;) I'll agree to remove it if I turn out to be the only one using
this, but this will be difficult to find out. Those who use multi-step Esc, please speak up! :)

I use Esc all the time!

I don't really use 'multi-step', just once or twice until the active tag is 'All' (or translated), and eventually 3 times (or 5 or 10, doesnt matter) to minimize to systray.
I prefer to search for something, and _then_ click a tag, and for me Esc (once or twice) is a convenient way to 'start anew.'

I would prefer to keep this over changing it to something like ctrl-backspace, for which I would need two hands because the keys are too far apart.

Hi date,
Thanks a lot for your opinion!

So you're saying, that you don't use Esc to clear the search box but leave tag selection? This means that it would be convenient for you if Esc immediately cleared both the
text search and tag selection?

Often I search for something while I am 'in' a tag, but want to search everywhere, so I need to select 'All' first, and I do this with Esc. So I use Esc primarily for resetting tags. (And minimizing to systray, so another advantage of this is, when I open up Cintanotes, I'm starting 'fresh.')

It took me some time to figure this out, in the beginning I tried 'backspace' (like in windows explorer) and I wondered why it sometimes didnt work...

Pressing once or twice doesnt really matter to me! I can see what is happening on the screen. But I don't really use it to only clear the search box, if that's what you were asking.

On a different note, somethging that would be more convenient for me would be to be able to use custom shortcut keys for bringing up Cintanotes and pasting something from the browser in a note ('clipping'), omitting the now mandatory 'Ctrl'.

Thanks for the provided insight.

Hm, that's interesting. Now Backspace with do a "back" command like in web browser - are you using this?

I see

Are you talking about Options/Hot keys? Please note that not all key combinations require Ctrl, for example Win+something can work as well (though in Windows 8 you'll be troubled to find a single letter windows-key-combo which is not used by the system).

I meant like in the treeview on the left, backspace moves 'up' one folder level. Like many other software. '<-' folds one and 'Home' goes all the way up. But CN tag view cannot have focus, and that was what confused me a little initially. But Im used to it now, I just needed to read the manual :-p

I meant a function key, like F2, F3 etc. I have a whole row that is unused.
I use xp, but even then the win-key would not be very practical.

Yes, the point here is that the tag sidebar can't receive focus.

Well, we're talking about system-wide hotkeys here. It is a strict no-no to grab a whole function key on a system-wide level.

Yes that's why I hope for the Esc-key to retain its function to return to 'all' in future versions.

Ok.
But other software allow for this too? Like desktop search/launchers, dictionaries, screen capture/readers etc.

We didn't intend to remove this function from the Esc key. The discussion was whether multi-step filter reset was needed.

I just want to avoid issues like "I installed CintaNotes and my <other important program> stopped working". Even if the investigation leads to a hotkey being redefined, it usually takes away useful time..

I must've misread something then, I just registered on this forum because I thought I read that.

Still I'm glad that you registered ;)

Thanks. Probably we could allow this in an "advanced" setting with a proper warning.

Hi
Just today I found out I can just press 'Enter' and CN will extend my search to 'All.' This is much easier didn't know that before!

Yes, that's neat, though this is a totally accidental feature!
What really happens when you press Enter is this: CN tries to interpret your input as a tag name, and having not found such a tag, switches the view to "All".
