Varying the indent

Postby orsonk » Thu Aug 22, 2019 8:01 pm

Does anybody know if the CintaNotes associated config. file has a place where I can increase the standard indent? I find myself using two Tabs often because I want more of an indent. But if there's a setting to simply enter a greater indent number as the standard.... that would be great.

Thanks.

There's an "editor.tabwidth" setting set to 8 by default. It appears to change the indent amount, but I'm not sure what units it is in. Try changing it and restart CN.

Thanks Gunars. The unit is spaces, obviously.

Well, maybe not obvious to me, or maybe I'm misinterpreting where this setting is used. :?

To test, I set the formatting to monospace. With the default "editor.tabwith = 8", I enter a series of "x<tab>x<tab>x". Note that the Xs are about 4 chars apart, but not quite. With a monospace font, they should at least align on a character boundary. Changing to "editor.tabwith = 24" increases the spacing, but not to 24 chars. It's approximately 10 and again, not aligned.

Well, it's a bit different.
It's more like "width in units equal to pixel width of a space character of selected note (not monospace) font".

So it's always using the width of a space char of the note text font, even when in monospace mode? I'd suggest that it should be the width of a space in whatever the current font is (regular or monospace). That would allow you to use aligned tabular info in monospace.

The problem is that a line of text can contain both regular and monospace font.
Making tab stops dependent on current font style is possible of course, but I'd say it's too much effort compared to what it brings to the table.

Good point. How about always using the width of a monospace space instead of a proportional space? For regular text and mixed text, you probably won't notice, but for monospaced lines, it gives the possibility of aligning items.

Good idea. I will take it into account for CN4. For CN3, we have feature freeze already - no UI-related changes. Otherwise CN4 will never arrive..
