tags and sections

When more than one section exists, let the tag suggestion only display tags for that section -- the same as what's displayed in the tag bar when Only Used Tags is selected.

The whole point to using sections for me is to separate notes that are unrelated to those in a different section. Seeing suggested tags from other sections is somewhat confusing and cluttered.

It's funny how people use the same program in different ways - for me, I want the opposite. I hate how the tags in a section are only for that section, and would like to see all the tags for the whole database, and be able to search them as well without having to click on the main section to do so.

If you right-click on the tag bar and select "No Tag Filter" instead of "Only Used Tags", you'll be able to see all the tags in the notebook, whether they're currently used in the section or not.

But, you're right. Many of the requests here reflect the different ways that people have decided to use CN, how they categorize their tags and organize their sections, etc. That's why you see comments like "CN would be perfect for me if only it did X in a certain way". I think Alex has been doing a very good job of separating generally useful features from those needed by a more specific scenario.

I'm still in the exploring phase myself, trying to decide how to organize some of my work. I like how easy it is to reorganize the tag hierarchies as I re-decide what I need. I'd be interested to hear how others are using CN, but that probably calls for a separate topic in the main part of the forum.

Today I learned that you can right click on the tag bar! Thanks - didn't know that was there.

Hmmm, I wonder if this F1 key does anything .... :o

<sorry, I need more sleep ;)>

I do periodically poke around the help file myself and keep finding things I've missed before, even when I've specifically been looking for them.

Hi all,
Well although it seems that the support for Gunars's idea is not that unanimous, still there's something to ponder on.

Two options that come to my mind:
1) Introduce another option "Tags/Autocomplete/Show tags from all sections
2) Display tags from other sections in different color
3) Only suggest tags from other sections when user input excludes all suggestions from the current section.
4) Add "More suggestions" as the last item, and switch to tags from other sections on choosing it (or by Ctrl+Space).
5) Some combination of the above

Personally i don't have problems with the current design. Still, how about the following suggestion: When the tag selection combo pops up, it should offer a check box "[ ] Also show tags from other sections". I am not saying this is easy to implement. But rather than having various options in the settings, there would be one option, located in an area, when you really need it.

Frankly, I wouldn't expect a suggestion box to have checkboxes. You see, the popup suggestions never receive focus (and for a good reason), but a check box is a focusable control. So either we'll mess with the focus, making the simple task of entering tags much more complicated, or there will be no possibility to check this checkbox from the keyboard. Neither option strikes me as particularly user-friendly :)
