CintaNotes crashing, losing notes

Postby Xhaiduk » Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:47 pm

Been a loyal CintaNotes user for last two years. In last couple months, it's been crashing randomly, taking whatever note I'm working on with it. Running latest updated always. Is this happening to anyone else? Any ideas of how to fix? Gonna have to change my whole workflow if I can't use CN reliably. Thanks!

Hi Xhaiduk,

thanks for the report, really sorry for the trouble this is making you!

As far as I can tell, there's currently one problem happening to other users,
namely that CN doesn't start up. Your case seems to be different since the crash
happens in the middle of a session, am I correct?
I myself unfortunately haven't been able to reproduce either of the problems, which makes
the debugging harder but still possible.
I'm sure that with a little of your help this can be fixed, so please don't give up on CN just yet ;)

Could you please tell me a few more details:
1) Does the crash happen silently or there's some message displayed?
2) What exactly you have been doing with CN at the time(s) of crash?
3) Can you reproduce the crash, or does it happen randomly?
4) Have you tried running with the "-d" command line switch (valid for 1.8.2+)? If so, is the "log.1.txt" file produced?
(From now on and till with get to the root of the problem, please always run CN with '-d' switch. If you're unsure how to do it, here are the instructions).
5) Please also try this version.

Thanks for the quick response. Not ready to give up yet, depend on it too much. Here's answers to your questions.

1) Silently. Then windows "application is not responding" message
2) Happens while I'm typing a note.
3) So far seems random
4) Will run with -d switch from now on. Presumably you'll only want the log from right after it crashes?
5) Installed beta. Do I need to redo the shortcut process for setting up the -d switch?

Also, this problem is made worse by the lack of autosave

Yes, but the whole log.N.txt file (zipped) would be good!

>Do I need to redo the shortcut process for setting up the -d switch?

Depends on which version is the shortcut referring to. Probably it'd be safest
to create a new shortcut to the new version, again with the -d switch.

>Then windows "application is not responding" message
So, strictly speaking, it doesn't crash, it hangs.
(Probably for you it's no difference, but for me it is very important!)
Maybe you can remember something else? Unless we figure out how to
make this problem reproducible, there's little I can do.
Maybe you can remember what you've been doing exactly?
Were you typing? What? Have you been using any text formatting at the moment?
Maybe lists? Tabulations?

Any miniscule piece of information is valuable. Thanks!

Thanks Alex, now that I know what details are important I'll keep an eye out next time it crashes, I mean hangs!
