Crashing at boot

Postby GaryF » Sat Jul 11, 2015 5:24 pm

I've just upgraded to v2.9.2 on Windows 7 64 bit and have found that often it crashes at boot. I've no idea why but there's a debug file which I thought may be useful.

Problem signature:

Hi GaryF,

I reported a similar thing a little while ago (starting with 2.8.6 I think) - except it doesn't happen all that often for me. Alex thinks it may be due to one of the components in CN itself - can you try the build he links here please?

I've downloaded that version. If it crashes again I will try it, thanks for your help :)

Hi Gary,
Chris is correct - I suspect that this issue is intermittent, depending on which virtual machine code is generated by the protector.
Please let me know if the issue still persists, thanks!

Please also see a possible fix:
http://group-mail.com/microsoft-windows ... error-fix/

In short:
Here is a Windows 7 and Vista StackHash and Appcrash Fix

1. Click on the Start menu and then go to the Control Panel
2. Click on System Maintenance and then System
3. Choose Advanced System Settings.
4. Under System Properties, select Settings from the Performance section at the top.
5. Click on the Data Execution Prevention tab.
6. Select “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select”.
7. Find the executable file for the application that triggered the error. (e.g. C:\Program Files\CintaNotes\cintanotes.exe)
8. Select the application causing the error and click Open to add it to your DEP Exceptions list.
9. Click OK to save your new settings.

It's only done it once since, but I have followed these instructions so let's see if it ever does it again
Thanks :)

Hi

It's been crashing again and several times. It took me 4 tries to get it going today. I've attached one of the error messages as an image.

Gary, thanks for the info!

Could you please send me these log.N.txt files?

[Please note that these files may contain some of your private data, such as note contents and
tag names (but no passwords). You may want to edit the file and remove this data
first.]

Hope this is not too much to ask, thank you!

It's not a problem at all except the log files are completely empty.

Edit: After hunting around it seems you must have debug logging turned on, I have done that now so if it crashes again I'll send the log files.

I have completely reinstalled my machine and this has happened again, and I've now enabled logging. However when I went to send the files I had no idea which ones would be necessary as they don't have date stamps. I've deleted them all now and will wait for it to happen again.

Ok, thanks. Note that the most recent logs have the largest number between "log" and "txt".

Right, it continues to crash so I've zipped up all the log files there. There's 1-5 but also 50, 50 may have been left over from when I deleted all the others. I'm sure you can make sense of them though.

Hi Gary,
From the logs I see that you're running V2.9.2 of CintaNotes - not the latest one.
Could you please try this version instead and tell me if the bug persists:

http://cintanotes.com/files/debug/Cinta ... Build3.zip

Huge thanks in advance!
(And if you need a renewed license key to try it - please drop me a line to support@cintanotes.com)

To be fair this problem has persisted across the last 2 versions. Is there any reason to think it's been dealt with yet?

Gary, sorry for the delay!
No, I don't think that the problem is fixed in the latest version.
But the latest version for sure has better and more detailed logging which might help
in diagnosing the problem.
An even better (logging-wise) version can be found here:

Thanks for the report!
Does the crash happen repeatedly now?
Would it be possible to collect the log of the crash?
Thanks!

Just the once so far. TBH There are dozens of text files in the crash log, I would not know where to start for the correct one. There's 5 for that day and they're all huge!
