[Managing] Show tag usage counters on sidebar (in tooltips)

Postby doublewitt » Mon Jun 01, 2009 12:47 am

How about seeing a (number) in brackets representing the total number of notes per tag in the tag sidebar...?

Hello doublewitt,

I thought about it, and even did the first internal version of tag sidebar with this suffixes, but I just didn't like how it looked - it was way too much visual noise. And after all, after you click on a tag, CintaNotes displays how many notes are there.

I think we should come up with some other really unobtrusive solution of showing which tags are used more than the others. But hopefully without different font sizes/colors - that just more visual noise.

Then again, how about tooltips?

Maybe the order for the tags can be set according to usage statistics (this is like a silent visual approach). The most used tag (number of notes) is at the top and then going downwards. And so, in fact, they are sorted by "number of notes" but with no apparent markings, colors, or other visual clutter...

I'd prefer a permanently visible count or tool tips. Keep them alpha sorted. Maybe an option for tag count sorting. Nod.

Agreed. If you were going to show a permanently visible count (not sure that's necessary), definitely keep them alpha sorted (or at least have the option to do so). I'm also not a fan of tool tips (ugly things).

However, I fully appreciate and support Alex's aim of minimising "visual noise" (I wish all developers thought the same way). So how about having a toggle keyboard shortcut that brings up a "statistics" listing -- showing total number of notes, number of notes for each tag, size of database etc -- the way a lot of word processors deal with word/paragraph/character count.

It might work OK -- I'm open to this, depending on result. Let's see what Alex thinks...

I think that's a good idea. In the commercial version it will be possible to even do some sort of advanced analysis and give advice, for example noticing that two tags have a 97% intersection rate and can be merged together.

Access to statistics is always interesting. Maybe the option to sort by "number of notes" can be added also so the tags get auto-sorted... (the user can turn it on/off)...

This is a feature that is available in Evernote that I really like (though they have changed how it works in the 3.5 version)

As mentioned above, Cintanotes does tell you how many notes are being displayed when you click a tag.

But what permanently visible tag counts allow you to see is how many other tags are sharing these notes.

Eg. tag1, tag2

There are 6 notes in a database, 2 with tag1, 2 with tag2 and 2 with both.

If you click tag1 it shows that there are 4 notes, and beside tag2 you can see that it is showing (2 of 4)

I understand the visual noise concern, and agree with it to a degree but I would love to see this function implimented.

Perhaps it could be a toggle-able or collapse-able section of the tags bar.

Hello Brian,

thanks for your suggestion. I guess I will make showing tag count in tooltips optional, so that you will be able to choose whether the tag count is displayed inline.
Also the idea of displaying how many tags are currently showing is great. It can be generalized to the following:
1) when all tags are visible, single number
2) when not all tags are visible, show <visible>(<total) e.g. 2(4)

That would be great. Maybe (<total) could be greyed out?

As for the visual noise concern... perhaps this function should be disabled by default and those of us who want it can activate it.

That way all your website and press screenshots continue to look as you want them.
