[Files] Support for multiple note files (#76)

Postby fgarner1 » Sun Mar 29, 2009 4:02 pm

I can't seem to figure out how to use multiple note files. From what I have read on the forum, it seems like it is possible.

I would like to be able to have a note file for "Code snippets" and another for "something else" and another for......... :?

CN is not ready yet for full notebook switching, but you can make do by renaming or copying your notebook.dat file, present in the CN program folder -- so for instance, you could have a notebook.dat.snip file with your code, while using a regular file for "something else", then you would rename it to notebook.dat.misc and after remove the '.snip' from the other file to access your code snippets (remember to close CN before doing this). :geek:

A batch/script could automate this process, but a better and easier solution is to use tags to differentiate note purpose -- so you'd have 'code' for some, and 'misc' for others. There are some posts with really good note organizing methods here at the forum, if you just search for them... :)

I totally support the answer Midas has given.

P.S.
Midas, really don't know how to thank you ;) The new release is quite time consuming and I haven't been able to answer promptly. Thanks for helping out!!

I think it's a welcome feature but I would like to make a question about multiple notebook file support.

Is the idea to have always one notebook active and eventually switch to another notebook? the other possibility is to evaluate as a feature concurrent use of more notebook files, but I don't know if it goes against a design principle of simplicity. Actuallly we were discussing feature number 89 (Tab-based note categories) which implied the introduction of tabs. Tabs might permit the use of multiple notebook files where for example if we have three tabs, two of them might come from a notebook file and the other tab from a different notebook file.

I really like the idea of multiple notebooks. If only there is a way to select it on the side, or perhaps set which ones are active (think Google Calendar). The latter is just an option, I'd be just as happy with one active Notebook at a time.

I get that tags can be used to differentiate data, but I do freelance and would love to have a separate notebook for each client for instance! Just to keep things tidier! Thanks! :).

Multiple note files would be huge for me. Like hapworth, I work on projects that need to have their own files instead of being separated by tags. Right now I'm making do with multiple copies of cintanotes in order to seperate my projects.

To make a suggestion, I would like to see a tab bar like firefox has, but as compact as possible.. preferably on the bottom. And when text is clipped, it would go into the last focused tab. Thanks for your hard work.
