Notes list header font is now grayed out

Postby ErikJon » Sat Oct 24, 2015 9:14 pm

I am using version 3.0 on XP.

I have just noticed that the "header font" on the "notes list" is now grayed out only when selected, while the unselected note headers are clearly black and very legible. This must have been a mistake in the new version, as I don't recall this happening before. It now makes the hearders harder to read. In fact, the selected note is the one that should always stand out.

See the screenshot example below. Notice the note header that says "Grammar questions about Spanish." This is the selected note, and yet the text is nearly grayed out, making it look almost "unselected," defeating the purpose. If it were not for the blue bar I would not know which note was selected.

I suspect it probably isn't a bug, but a deliberate change - CN's design has always been a bit subtle/understated. I see the same thing here too - it isn't just on your system - and accessibility issues like this (which include visibility, this specific type of issue) are close to my heart (so to speak). I'd like to see it changed - not necessarily back to what it was, but made better. At the moment, because I don't have perfect eye sight - I wear glasses - it is hard for me to tell what note is active/selected, unless I look at the CN window for a few seconds (and notice the slightly darkened note header bar). Even going back to what it was previously - with the non-greyed out font - that would not really improve things.

Personally, I would like to see a highlighting option (disabled by default), that would highlight the note (and there are a number of ways this could be done - note header bar, rectangle overlay around the note itself etc). And by highlight, I mean in the traditional "paper" highlighter sense - ie a bright colour, such as fluoroescent yellow, blue, green or pink (the main colours that physical highlighters come in).

Yes, you're right. It ought to be even more highlighted than how it already was.

Thanks for the report.
The reason is simple: the selection is implemented as a color overlay (think of a piece of colored glass laid over the note).
This has the effect of making light areas more prominent and dark areas (like the title text) less prominent.

But I understand your concern about legibility. Will think on how to improve this. Thanks!

You are welcome.

I worked in the printing industry previously, and when we had an overlay it was often deliberate. This is because the black text in the background does not get any blacker, even with an "overprint," and in the worse case, could only make it better, if it did.

So, I sensed that what you said was the source of the problem, but as I don't know how the colors mix on a computer screen, I did not know technically why it was happening.

Perhaps it could be rectified by putting the overlay BEHIND the text, in every case, as the blackness of the text will overpower any other color behind it.

No need to reply.

You're probably right and there's some kind of bug with color mixing. I'll look into it, added to todo list.
Thanks
Alex
