dashes

Postby Bill » Mon Nov 21, 2016 5:27 pm

Whenever I paste text containing an en dash or em dash into the CintaNotes note field, it converts the dashes to hyphens. Is there some good reason for that behavior? It's mildly annoying, because I then have to manually convert the hyphens back to dashes.

Hi, thanks for the report!

Could you please post an example of text with n and m dashes that get autoconverted? Thanks!

Unfortunately I can't provide an example here, because the forum software does the same thing -- i.e., dashes are converted to hyphens when I paste text here. But an en dash is slightly longer than a hyphen, and an em dash is slightly longer than an en dash. If you look at the character map of any font, you will see the variations easily. For certain kinds of writing, the hyphen/dash distinction is actually important.

I did some further experiments this morning, and I discovered that the dashes are pasted properly in text copied from OneNote and Evernote but that they are converted to hyphens when pasting from Word.

Maybe you could send a sample Word file to support@cintanotes.com?

Alex, any thoughts yet about the problem with dashes pasted from MS Word?

Hello Bill,

I'm still trying to figure out the root cause of this problem. In the meanwhile, Christmas release is upon us, so this bug will have to be fixed in the version that comes after that. But I'll provide a fix for you as soon as it's available!

Just an amusing little postscript to my earlier note about dashes. This evening, in CintaNotes, I copied a sentence containing an em dash and pasted it in a lower position in the same note, and I discovered, to my surprise, that CN converts an em dash to a hyphen even *within* the app when pasting. Same for en dashes.

Hi Bill! Yes, this is a quirk of Microsoft's RichEdit control. We are currently trying to work around it..
