I ran the beta's in a seperate folder without my settings file.

But how I do it, is to automatically save without asking when pressing Esc or closing the window. However, when I click 'Cancel' I mean don't save my changes. That is how it worked before autosave. (v 3.7 and earlier.)

Wait, when you click "Cancel" it should display a message box asking to save changes.
Doesn't it happen even when you rename the settings file?

There has never been a message box asking for confirmation to cancel. (Until now.) Just one for pressing 'Esc.'

I'd say 'closing' and 'cancelling' are two different things.

So on pressing 'Esc' (and pressing the top-right X, perhaps) the message should ask for 'Save?' like how it is now. Because you close the window, and 'what to do' has not been decided.

But if there was to be a confirmation dialog for 'Cancel' it should ask 'Sure to discard?' because discarding and closing are two different things. With 'closing' the discarding is not implied. But when you press 'Cancel' then that is exactly what you want.

Yes, I agree it should be phrased differently. "Discard changes?" instead of "Save changes?"
I'll fix it

The Cancel button should be treated differently from closing the window and have a different dialog. Not the same one you get on closing the window, I like quick saving with Esc.

Yes, Cancel button will be treated differently.
In Beta 2 I changed it from 3-button message box ("Yes-No-Cancel") to a 2-button ("Yes-No")
