[Ann] CintaNotes 2.8.6 Beta 1

Postby CintaNotes Developer » Wed Apr 29, 2015 8:18 am

Hi all,

I know this is unexpected - what, 2.8.6 beta after 2.9 beta?

(By the way, huge thanks to all who took part in testing the 2.9 beta, and provided comments - you guys
are awesome!)

The reason is that we've stumbled upon a major setback while implementing support for attachments in
the Simplenote sync. Turns out that Simplenote can't handle notes of more than 500Kb in size. This was ok for
notes themselves, since they are seldom more than 100k, but for attachments this is critical.

It's time to admit that we've arrived at the limits of what Simplenote can do for us. Of course we could work around
this problem by using extra "phantom" notes with file data, but I consider this to be a messy solution, since these notes
would be visible in all mobile and web clients.

Dropbox is also not a solution here as we wouldn't want to bother the users with registering on two different platforms
just to sync the notes.

So we have no other choice but to take a step back and re-think the attachment syncing. We are now considering
using a cloud file storage like Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage. Obviously this will take us more time, and hence 2.9
release has to be postponed.

I always liked the approach of Blizzard Entertainment: "we'll release it when it is ready".

In the meanwhile, we've accumulated a number of important bugfixes that should greatly
improve the user experience, and I consider it unproductive to delay releasing them any longer.
So here we are: 2.8.6.

Hope you can relate, and I'd be grateful if you'd be able to test the version below! Thanks!

WARNING: Note that this version is not able to read the 2.9 format, so to downgrade from 2.9 Beta
you'd need to use XML export!

Apr 28, 2015 - Version 2.8.6 Beta1

In this version:

Fixes:
  • Window position not always restored correctly after restart
  • Editor: internal note links can get corrupt
  • Editor: on some computers note links are not copied when pasting notes as RTF
  • Editor: ampersand (&) and apostrophe (') are not recognized as part of URL
  • Editor: link editor doesn't resize after pressing enter
  • Editor: removing list style should convert vertical tabs to CRLFs
  • Editor: link field should be trimmed on exiting the edit mode
  • Search: search string becomes lower case after program restart
  • Simplenote sync: recycle bin issues
  • Simplenote sync: CN resets SN note's "Pinned to top" status
  • Simplenote sync: crash on downloading note containing special chars
  • Simplenote sync: infinite uploading
  • Error when closing CN while editor with a changed note is open
  • Synchronization dialog: not possible to delete login credentials
  • Synchronization dialog: initial focus missing
  • License: trailing blanks in the "Registration Name and Email" field prevent registration

Download:
Installable: CintaNotes_2_8_6_Beta1_Setup.exe
Portable: CintaNotes_2_8_6_Beta1.zip

Hi Alex,

sorry to hear about this unexpected, but major issue which is the cause for holding back 2.9.

Nevertheless, thanks for the 2.8.6 beta.

I can not confirm this fixed. It worked in 2.9 beta 1 though.

Hi,
1- At first I would like to appreciate all your efforts in developing this great software
2- It is near 4 years I am using this software almost everyday
3- When I saw the last upgrade, I was almost sure something would be wrong
3A- Database would be too big to be handled easily
3B- Or, you should create separate folders which would be too complex to copy and transfer
3C- Or, Attachments would be too big to be accepted by simplenote
4- The most beautiful thing in Cintanotes was its simplicity and speed which was partly due the fact it was only working with alphabets without pictures or movies
5- I think one reason for pushing cintanotes to this hurdle was requests of users, it is strange, they preferred Cintanotes to other rival note taking programs based on its speed (which was because it was not working with pictures) and now they were pushing Cintanotes to fall in this trap ...

I love Cintanotes, I work with it every day, Please let it be what it was ... simple and quick for notes ...

If people want plain text with speed, they will just use Notepad. As a paid program, CN needs new features to survive (as the votes for various features on the roadmap will attest), it is as simple as that.

Thanks, I'm sorry as well!

Seems this has been fixed in the dev branch and not backported to the stable branch. I'll fix this.

Sure

Thomas Lohrum wrote:http Links get broken

We weren't able to reproduce this, some hope lies with the watchdog catching it.

Thomas Lohrum wrote:File Links get lost on cut & paste

Should be fixed by the "Editor: on some computers note links are not copied to rtf" fix.

Thomas Lohrum wrote:Internal Note's Links II

The Alt+Shift symbol problem was fixed ("Editor: internal note links can get corrupt"),
everything else should be catched by the watchdog.

Thomas Lohrum wrote:F3 search broken?

Planned for 2.9.1

Trim Title

Will be included into 2.8.6 (not yet in Beta1 though).
Will be active only when editor.trimlines=1 (which becomes the default now btw).

Shortcut Handling in remarks field (Ctrl+Pos1 and Ctrl+End)

Will be included into 2.8.6 (not yet in Beta1 though).

Postcondition failed: app::model::data::NoteMapper::getNote

Planned for 2.9.1

And what about the watchdog?

The link watchdog is not included with this beta, but will be in 2.8.6 final.

Hi Orodeus, thanks for all the kind words!
I can relate to what you're saying, but still can't fully agree with you. Some features are just so basic to many users that they are
not even going to consider using the software which doesn't support them. Ability to attach pictures, sounds and documents to notes
is one of these basic features, and the huge number of votes is a proof. The same goes for the encryption support, and for
ability to view and edit notes from the user's mobile device.

Many people were also complaining about adding text formatting support, and Simplenote sync. But people are using these features
on a regular basis, they've become big selling points.

However you're right that this feature is not really CN's competitive advantage. Actually today I consider only three features of CN to
be its competitive advantages: hotkey text clipping, real-time search, and powerful hierarchic tagging system. Everything else builds
on top of this.

But it doesn't mean that the "baseline" features can be ignored. They simply are a must nowadays.

True. I couldn't have put it better :)
