Create tag with forward slash

Postby usbpoweredfridge » Wed Apr 27, 2016 12:46 pm

If I create a note and enter a tag like this '1/2' (not including the quote marks), then the tag is displayed as the number after the slash, ie '2' in this case. I guess this is because CN assumes you are creating a tag hierarchy (ie '1' is the parent tag, '2' is the child tag). However, assuming I actually want that exact tag forward slash and all and not a tag hierarchy, how do I get CN to stop recognising the forward slash as an attempt to create a hierarchy?

Hi Chris! Glad to hear from you:)

I'm afraid that using forward slash in tag names is currently not possible, as it is reserved for hierarchic tags.

There's a request on the roadmap to allow users to select the tag separator symbol:
http://roadmap.cintanotes.com/topics/72 ... or-symbol/

Unfortunately it collected only 2 votes during 3 years.. So not much chance here, unfortunately.

However, there's a workaround: you can use any Unicode forward slash like U+2044 or U+2215.
Sure they are not as convenient to type (you might want to copy-paste them). But if all you need is the _appearance_ of a slash,
it will get the job done.

You might also want to consider using ready-made Unicode symbols for 1/2 or 3/4.

Hi Alex - good to be back (been a little while since my last post here)! :) Yep, I figured there was probably no simple way to do this, but thought I'd ask. Just for simplicity sake in this case, I decided to come up with another name for the tag, that didn't involve the forward slash. Nice to have a potential workaround though should I stumble across the same issue in the future :)

HI Chris,
welcome - sorry could't offer you a better solution ;)
Have you already seen the new beta?
Would be great to hear your opinion on the new Rules feature ;)

I have, yes. I haven't tried it out as yet, but thankfully CN is natively portable by default, which means I can easily install the beta without affecting my main install. In fact, I've just done so - extracted the zip version to a folder on my desktop (my main install is via the installer version, so it is installed into Program Files and uses the AppData\Roaming folder to store its config), made a copy of my main CN database into the same folder, and ran the .exe file to generate the .ini file. I have the rules screen open at the moment.

Anything I notice I will put into the beta thread (the first thing I noticed - the modal rule creation window - has already been addressed).
