[Ann] CintaNotes 3.6 Beta 2

Postby CintaNotes Developer » Tue Mar 21, 2017 12:29 pm

Hi all,

Sorry for being silent for quite some time. Polishing HTML clipping took its toll: the task is way harder than you might think.
Basically it can be even compared to writing a very simple and stripped-down, but still - own! - browser engine.

This version should do a better job at handling HTML than previous version, although there still are some untouched
places (most notably tables).

Also, as promised, now you can paste HTML into note editor.

Please take a look, would be grateful for any feedback!

Mar 21, 2017 - Version 3.6 Beta2
In this version:

Features:
  • Parse HTML for links and basic formatting upon clipping
  • Support pasting of HTML into notes list and note editor
Enhancements:
  • Note links: open another notebook's note if it exists in opened notebook
  • Make scrollbars clickable when window is maximized and mouse is at the rightmost edge
Fixes:
  • Export: XML not created when previous directory is removed
  • Note links: keyboard shortcuts didn't work in Russian
  • HTML export: regression - no spacing between paragraphs
  • Editor: tab indents not lining up correctly
  • Drag and drop: block keyboard while drag
  • Editor: unwanted keyboard layout change upon paste
  • Notes list: weird selection behavior when selection.followedited = 0
  • About dialog: missing licensee info
  • Simplenote sync: sync could fail because of certificate security error

The spacing has improved over beta 1 for Vivaldi but become worse for Firefox. More empty lines consisting solely of tabs, even more spacious and flying lists, as you can see in the image I include. The outer windows are Vivaldi, the middle ones Firefox.
The links on images work now, except when they're in a table.
Everything in tables is monospaced now, I don't think that is intentional.

Hi date,
Thanks for checking the beta out. Yes, I'm already aware of the FF issues - am fixing them right now.
About tables, the monospaced font was intentional, maybe in a future version CN will automatically
calculate column widths and render tables in monospaced font. But probably you're right that there's no
need for monospaced font before this functionality is implemented.

date, could you please try this version in your browsers? Should finally fix most of the FF whitespace issues. Also made the tables non-monospaced again. Thanks in advance!

Hi Alex!

It looks much better in FireFox! Good job!

It is possible to retain indents in lists?

Hi Alex!

Yes, beta 3 is working much better with FF 52.0.1. Interpreting links in pasting has been working well also. Thanks for this feature!

BTW, in case you were ever considering browser extensions for clipping, here is Neville Franks (author of Surfulator and Clibu) recent take on the pain of supporting FF extensions:

It's perfect now!! Such an improvement over the b2. And the links in tables work as well.

All that is clipped is retained in an organised manner now, just like plaintext, but with the links. I think trying to replicate the table structures will make it worse in many ways, with little that is of benefit; I can think of many arguments against it. I really like how it is now, in beta 3!

Great!

It is possible, but since usual lists (created with the Format menu) don't have indents, I wonder why should the lists clipped from HTML be treated differently.

Thanks, Gunars! Glad to hear!

Thanks for the interesting read. No, I didn't really plan on developing browser extensions - realized quite well what kind of a rabbit hole it would be ;)

Nice! Seems we're finally ready for a release. Huge thanks for your help!

Ok! Forget about it.
