[Managing] tag suggestions per section

Postby date » Mon Oct 26, 2015 3:27 pm

I have stuff in different sections, of which whose contents do not relate much to each other, and consequently have a different set of tags.

When I'm assigning tags to a note, I use Ctrl-space to help me select the appropiate tags (and not forget some.)

However, tags from another section, not applicable to note subjects in the current section, are also suggested, which make for a longer (and growing) list than necessary.

Could this feature to have only tag suggestions from the current section be implemented? Or does it already exist, and am I overlooking something?

(I understand an alternative is to have different .db-files.)

Yes, I'm aware of this problem.
Probably you're right and CN should suggest only tags from the current section.
But sometimes you want to use a tag which is available in other section, but not in the current one.
And you'll wonder why CN doesn't suggest it.

But! I have a great idea.
Let CN suggest tags only from the current section, but only as long as there are matches.
As soon as there are no more matches, the search should extend to tags from all section.
Will this work, what do you think? Or would it just confuse the user that the list of suggestions
changes unexpectedly?

Hi
I'm not sure if I would appreciate this behaviour!?

I do have many tags where this would be a great thing
but I have some tags that I use across sections on purpose.

E.g. project specific tags will only appear in one section
but generic knowledge and task specific tags will span across sections.

Maybe we could limit the sections used for tag suggestions
on those sections selected in the tabs section bar!? => or is this what you meant by 'current section'?

If the tag is already used in a section, it will appear in the suggestion list immediately.
The only time when you'll have to enter a "longer" part of its name to get the suggestion is when you're using it for the first time in a given section.
And yes, under "active section" I meant "active section selection".

Well, in that case I think it would certainly be an improvement :)

I'm usually browsing the list for appropriate tags for some new note. That is when I haven't typed in anything yet.
As soon as the first letter is typed, the number of suggestions is already reduced significantly.
I now have to browse a list of 100 tags (well, subtags help and one section has japanese tags), this would be more annoying when I would have say 300.

However, suppose I use only roman tags, and every letter was used evenly, typing one letter would divide the number of suggestions by about 40. That would make suggestions for a notebook with 2000 tags easily managable.

So, not suggesting tags from other sections, when the first letter hasn't been typed (only ctrl-space is pressed), would already be more efficient in my opinion and self-explainable for people using this. (People using tag suggestions before they type.)

To start suggesting from other sections, when there are no more matches from the current one, would be an improvement too, but a list of 50 tags (2000/40  ) is not too difficult to read. Type a second letter and youre down to two...

Thanks for your comment!
If I understand correctly, you propose to only hide tags from other section when 1 letter has been typed?

No, when zero letters have been typed. Just when ctrl-space is pressed in the tag field without typing anything.

But to hide tags from other sections when there are no matches, as you said, would be preferable too, at least for me, but that would be less weighty because of the significant reduction in suggestions as I indicated above. (But its certainly not an unfavorable idea.)

My initial suggestion was to have an option to always have those tags separated (or rather I thought perhaps I failed to notice that option), hope I'm not too confusing!!

Well this makes sense, as Ctrl+Space tends to list all tags now, which can be quite a big list.

I meant hide tags from other sections _unless_ there are no matches in the current section.

You mean, display tags from other sections somehow differently in the list?

Yes, to hide those suggestions from other sections when nothing is typed would me my wish #1.

(An empty string would not match anything in the current section.)

The emphasis was on the word 'option' and separated meant 'one section, one list of tags.' Like somehow tie this (the suggestion list) in with the lower 3 options about tag-filtering in the right-clickmenu on the tagbar, or have another place where this 'option' is.
That was my initial idea.

But your idea is better, as long as empty strings are taken into consideration: 'to hide tags from other sections, unless something has been typed and there are no matches for that in the current section's tags.'

Ok. But I think there should be a way to force display of all tag. Maybe require to press Ctrl+Space two times for that?

Now we have cleared it up. Thanks for the suggestion. I've added it to the todo list.

That would work, at least for when nothing is typed. That alone would suffice for me.

I'm not sure about this when something has been typed, for people who reuse tags across sections have to learn this shortcut key. In that case, I think to hide them until there are no more matches in the current section(s), like you said, is better. But I don't use the same tag names across sections, so I have no practical experience in this.

Now we have cleared it up. Thanks for the suggestion. I've added it to the todo list.

Thank you for looking into it!
